Summer gives children a break from homework, early mornings, and packed school schedules. It can also provide an ideal opportunity to address changes in their vision. Starting a child’s myopia management plan during summer allows time for a detailed evaluation, treatment selection, and adjustment before returning to the classroom.
Myopia, also called nearsightedness, causes distant objects to appear blurry. It often begins during childhood and may continue progressing as the eyes grow. Standard glasses can correct blurry vision, but myopia management is designed to help slow that progression.
An effective myopia management plan begins with a comprehensive eye exam. During this visit, the eye doctor can evaluate the child’s prescription, eye health, visual habits, family history, and previous prescription changes.
Completing this evaluation during summer helps parents avoid waiting until school begins and vision problems start affecting classroom performance. It also creates time to review available options and choose a treatment that fits the child’s age, prescription, lifestyle, and comfort level.
Some myopia treatments require children and parents to learn new routines. Summer provides a calmer environment for building those habits without balancing homework, sports practices, and early school mornings.
Beginning treatment during summer may offer more time to:
• Practice inserting, removing, and caring for contact lenses
• Adjust to wearing specialized lenses or new glasses
• Establish a consistent schedule for prescribed eye drops
• Attend initial follow-up visits without missing class
• Monitor comfort and vision during everyday activities
This adjustment period can help children feel more confident and prepared when school starts.
Myopia management is not the same for every child. I Care Vision Center offers several approaches, including overnight orthokeratology lenses, MiSight daily disposable contact lenses, Stellest spectacle lenses, and low-dose atropine eye drops. The recommended option will depend on the child’s vision, eye health, maturity, and daily routine.
Orthokeratology, also known as Ortho-K, uses customized lenses worn overnight to temporarily reshape the cornea. Children remove the lenses in the morning and may experience clear daytime vision without glasses or contact lenses.
Daily disposable myopia management contacts can provide clear vision while helping slow prescription changes. Children who prefer glasses may be candidates for specially designed myopia management spectacle lenses. Low-dose atropine may also be considered for children who need a simple nightly treatment or are not ready for contact lenses.
Starting myopia management during summer also creates an opportunity to improve daily visual habits. Parents can encourage outdoor play, regular screen breaks, appropriate reading distances, and balanced lighting during near work.
These habits cannot replace professional myopia treatment, but they can support a child’s overall eye health. Establishing them during summer may make them easier to continue throughout the school year.
Children depend on clear distance vision to read classroom boards, follow presentations, recognize faces, and participate in sports. Starting myopia management before school resumes gives the eye doctor time to check the child’s response and make any necessary adjustments.
